Costco, one of the biggest retailers in the United States, will be raising its starting wage to $16/hour.

Per CNN Business, Costco's chief executive Craig Jelinek said today (February 25) during a U.S. Senate Budget Committee hearing the warehouse giant will increase its starting wage beginning next week.

Journalist Steven Greenhouse notes Costco's wage increase puts them above Amazon and Target, whose minimum wage begins at $15/hour, and Walmart, whose minimum wage begins at $11/hour.

Costco's decision to increase its starting wage comes during a time in the U.S. where the minimum wage is a hot topic of debate within Congress and among citizens at large. Currently, the federal minimum wage is $7.25/hour, and it's been that amount since 2009.
