Angela Lansbury died today. She was easily one of the most beloved actresses of her time. Her career lasted longer than eight decades. In her years in the entertainment industry, she won several awards. She's been nominated for three Academy Awards, won two Golden Globe Awards and five Tony Awards. One of few actresses known for theater, film and television, she won a Kennedy Center Honors award in 2020. Ironically, the award she never won was the Tony. In spite of being nominated for one 18 times for her work on Murder, She Wrote. But that role did land her an induction into the TV Academy Hall of Fame (wikipedia.org).

Angela Lansbury also won an Honorary Academy Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Art, and an Lifetime Achievement Tony Award.

Anyone who saw Lansbury on the stage or screen knows she had such a regal presence about her. Which is to be expected, as the actress grew up in an upper-middle class family in London. Her mother was an actress and her father a politician, which also lent itself to her balance of grace and savvy. Lansbury started acting at the young age of 9, when she used it as a coping mechanism to deal with her father's death.

Lansbury's first role on the screen was as a cockney maid in Gaslight in 1944. She was only 17 when she landed that role, and a social worker had to accompany her on set. That role kicked off her career. Lansbury signed a 7-year contract with Metro Goldwyn-Mayer after being cast in that movie. She appeared in another MGM film two years later, when Til The Clouds Roll By was released in 1946. Since then she has done countless films, tv shows, and stage productions.

While Angela Lansbury did amazing work in television and onstage as well, we're just focusing on her movies right now. Here's a list of our favorites.

Wendy Rush, 96.3KKLZ Las Vegas

Gaslight (1944)

Another supporting role for a young Angela Lansbury, this movie brought her first Academy Award nomination.

National Velvet (1944)

Lansbury shines in this film, opposite Elizabeth Taylor. They played sisters. Favorite line of Lansbury's: "What does it feel like to be in love with a horse?"

The Picture Of Dorian Gray (1945)

A very young Angela (only 20 at the time) won a Golden Globe for this role, and landed her second Oscar nomination. If you only watch one Lansbury movie, make it this one.

The Harvey Girls (1946)

The dynamic duo of Angela Lansbury and Judy Garland is too good to miss in this classic. And Lansbury shows off her singing and dancing skills in this one. She's simply fabulous!

2. The Reluctant Debutant (1958)

Character: Mabel Claremont, a meddling mother who is trying to set her daughter up with an upper-class beau who has another prospect.

The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

This scene is SO good. Angela Lansbury is amazing in this role as the mother of a soldier who is behind political anarchy. So different than some of her other roles, this one is arguably her best. It scored her Golden Globe win and an Academy Award nomination.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971)

Seven years after they did it in Mary Poppins, this film mingled real actors with cartoon characters. Only these cartoons play soccer. :)

Death On The Nile (1978)

A murder mystery based on a boat on the Nile River. Lansbury is one of the murder suspects in this fun film that landed her an award and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Nanny McPhee (2005)

Angela is a fun addition to this movie. She plays a mean great-aunt of newly-orphaned children. Spoiler alert: she gets hers in the end...green cake, anyone?
