How Most People Count With Their Fingers
It was an easy question, but we want to know how most people counted with their fingers. So, how do you count? Do you start with your index finger or your thumb. Controversial stuff on The Mike & Carla Morning Show this morning. But listeners did respond!
It all started when Mike O’Brian noticed Carla Rea counting on her hand starting with her thumb. When asked if that’s how she always counts, she replied “yes!” Which Mike thought was the oddest thing. But then to find out that Morty does the same thing…but for good reason.
However, the discussion got heated when Mike said that the “thumb” is NOT considered a finger! Carla disputed saying that it was. Mike’s response, “…then why do they call it a thumb!” After research, Carla noted that the thumb is considered a “digit” just like all the other fingers.
That’s when Mike actually agreed with Carla saying that he’s good calling it a “digit”, but it’s still referred to as a “thumb” and NOT a finger. That’s when even more listeners jumped into the conversation taking both sides!
“One, two, three, four, five…”
Once again, only discussing the heavy topics of the day, the conversation continued. Morty actually pointed to the fact that he begins counting with his thumb for one reason. He can hold out his “third” finger to count to four. With that said, Mike of course pointed out that if in fact that’s your “third” finger, you don’t count you thumb as a finger.
Hmmmm! Point well taken Mr. O’Brian…but conversation raged on. Others pointed out that Europeans use their thumb as a starting point when counting on their fingers. Well, too bad weren’t not in Europe right?
Nonetheless, it was all in good fun right up until a woman on the phone gave Mike the “thumb” to the whole discussion. You have to listen to find out why because it was classic the way she set it up! Enjoy
