America has been through a LOT over the past 25 years, but there was always one constant: A big blue 20% off coupon in your mailbox to use at Bed Bath & Beyond - even if it expired five years ago - "sure, we'll still take it!" But that's all coming to an end.
Bed Bath & Beyond has been struggling for a while, and this past weekend they declared bankruptcy. There's no restructuring or anything, it's just over. And that makes this writer sad.
The big blue coupons that once made us dance with joy, will only be good through Tuesday, April 25, and then they'll be useless. But for a moment it doesn't matter, because they're liquidating everything, so there will be deep discounts and going-out-of-business sale prices.
The store began in 1971 as Bed 'n Bath. The first store was in New Jersey. It became Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987, and in the late-'90s, it started becoming a mainstream big box store, and that's when the "Big Blue" coupons started.
Bed Bath & Beyond peaked around 2011, when there were more than 1,100 stores. The troubles started in 2019, and unfortunately, the pandemic didn't help. It made everyone learn real fast about buying online - even from the store you always went into to touch all the bedding, and look at the air fryer, and waffle maker. BEFORE you bought it.
If you're a Bed Bath & Beyond shopper, keep reading - here's what you need to know:
Starting Wednesday, everything will be final sale, and won't be returnable. Also be sure to use your GIFT CARDS. You have two weeks, then they'll stop accepting them on May 8th. They'll stop accepting reward points from their loyalty program on May 15th.
Bed Bath & Beyond has been a staple of wedding registries for years. Customers who registered with Bed Bath & Beyond will eventually have their information transferred to a competitor’s service, where guests can purchase similar items. The company expects to notify customers about its registry plans in the coming days.
Bye, bye big blue coupons - we will miss you!
