Upon the release of his latest album, Rick Springfield has been very candid about his lifelong struggle with mental illness. Frontiers Records released The Snake King last month, with a single called Suicide Manifesto. Springfield recently admitted that he has struggled with depression since his teenage years, and even attempted suicide when he was 16.

The single doesn't sound like you think it would. It's actually rather upbeat, unlike its subject matter. Give it a listen:

Springfield sat down with People Magazine to discuss his new album, and the dark years of his life that inspired it.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, please call the National Suicide Hotline. Call 1-800-273-8255.
