Celebrities And The Mullet Hairstyle

You’ve probably heard by now that the mullet has made a comeback in hair fashion in the last few decades. And hopefully you didn’t pass out before hearing that it’s not the 80s style you’re thinking of. I know Billy Ray has become more popular since his kid got so edgy, but he’s still not quite that influential. Remember his hair during the “Achy Breaky Heart” days? That’s the hair that isn’t coming back. Yes, let’s all take a moment to rejoice.

The Modern Mullet

What has come back is more of a shag look than a traditional mullet from yesteryear. That had a very severe difference between the really short sides and top of the head compared to the long tail in the back. What celebrities have been rocking in the 2000s is more subtle. Some are doing a bit longer in the back but still keep the top and sides long as well. Some are doing what’s really more of a shag look. And I have seen a couple hairdos more similar to what Joan Jett wore in the 80s.

A Hairstyle With Roots In History

There are many versions of the mullet, both old and new. And, according to mulletchamp.com, the hairstyle has actually been around a very long time. Mullet Champ even mentioned that Homer’s “Illiad” made a reference to a hairstyle that sounded a lot like the mullet: “their forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the backs.” They also mentioned that back in Greek days, the mullet served a protective purpose. The long hair in back covered up the neck from sun damage, while short hair in front still showed off the face.

Here’s another thing you might not know, because I know I didn’t. There are names for different mullets. Billy Ray Cyrus, who we can all agree is a mullet expert, breaks them down in this video.

Celebrities Rocking The Modern Mullet

Well I can’t argue that resourcefulness, no matter how unattractive I think the mullet can be. But, just like in the 80s, there are some celebrities that have really made the modern version of the mullet work for them. Here are my favorites.
