The first thing to consider is that there are approximately 282 million registered vehicles cruising the streets and freeways in the U.S.A. That’s according to an article by Rebecca Henderson on MarketWatch.com. Second, the way we buy, and own cars is changing. People are keeping their cars much longer than they used to. In fact, the average length of car ownership in American reached 12.2 years in 2022. Per Henderson’s article, that’s the fifth consecutive year that the average age of our nation’s cars has increased.
Of course, one of the main reasons we’re keeping our cars longer is that the average price of vehicles has risen dramatically over the past couple of decades. Furthermore, wages have not kept up with the higher prices of automobiles. Nevertheless, when you need a new car, you go get one. So, what were the most popular automobiles sold in America in 2022? According to MarketWatch.com, it’s the Chevy Silverado pickup truck, the Ford F-150 pickup truck, and the Toyota RAV4 crossover SUV. As a matter of fact, the only sedan in the 2022 top ten list is the Toyota Camry. All the other vehicles are either pickup trucks or SUV’s.
The Rise In Electric Vehicle (EV) Ownership In The U.S.A.
Recently, there has been a big push by the federal government, some state governments, and automobile manufacturers, to get us to buy electric vehicles. Subsequently, EV ownership rates have increased quite a bit over the past few years. Henderson’s article points out that in 2022, 5.7% of all car sales in the U.S. were electric vehicles. In addition, MarketWatch.com stats show the best-selling EV models are the “Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, Chevrolet Bolt, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Volkswagen ID.4.”
Another important thing to note about electric vehicle ownership in America is that EV’s are most popular in the western U.S. Henderson’s information notes that the states with the highest rates of EV ownership are “California, Hawaii, Washington, Nevada, and Colorado.” That’s right, The Silver State loves its EV’s.
Conversely, the states where drivers are not jumping on the electric vehicle bandwagon are in the Midwest and southeastern U.S.A. Those states with low EV ownership include “North Dakota, Mississippi, West Virginia, South Dakota, and Louisiana.”
