This is our favorite Pretenders song. "Brass in Pocket" had a great groove and a sensuous vocal from Hynde. Few disputed her claim that she would âmake you noticeâ â and many would have been happy to give her the âattentionâ she seemed to crave in the songs.
Considering the subject matter, "Back on the Chain Gang" is deceptively cheery. In memory of Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman-Scott, who died of a heroin overdose. "Back on the Chain Gang" was originally written as an homage to Hynde's then-boyfriend Ray Davies before being rewritten as a dedication to Honeyman-Scott.
It's hard to imagine the Pretenders writing one of the season's most famous Christmas tunes if you just knew their early material. But our finest mistletoe mixtapes are incomplete without it. It's best heard on a cold winter day, with snow falling as a visual accompaniment.
"Don't Get Me Wrong" examines the complexity of love from a feminine perspective, using metaphors ranging from tides to fireworks to make the point that love is unpredictable. If you can endure a few setbacks, what you discover may be worth the wait.
By 1984, Chrissie Hynde had had enough of the media ("I can't get from the cab to the curb/ without some little jerk on my back") and unleashed "Middle of the Road." The song also reflects on her aging (she was 33 at the time). The Pretenders deliver great jams, from the legendary opening drum breakthrough Chrissie's devastating harmonica solo.
