Archie Williams is taking America by storm. The America's Got Talent contestant is getting attention for not only his audition but also his back story.
Before performing, Archie explained to the judges that he was incarcerated for 37 years for a crime he didn't commit. "DNA freed me," Archie states before telling his story. He was convicted of raping and stabbing a 30-year-old caucasian woman. "I knew I was innocent; I didn't commit a crime. But, being a poor black kid, I didn't have the economic ability to fight the state of Louisiana."
He goes on to explain that he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. "Freedom is of the mind. I went to prison, but I never let my mind go to prison," Williams tells Terry Crews. He then reveals that with new technology, they were able to match the fingerprints with a serial rapist and let him free.
For Archie's audition, he sang Elton John's hit "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me." He received a standing ovation from not only the crowd, but all four judges.
After his performance, Elton John went to Twitter to talk about the touching moment. "I was moved to tears when I heard Archie’s story and saw him perform 'Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me.' The courage and forgiveness shown by him is truly inspiring. The same spirit that the world found so inspiring with Nelson Mandela. Love, E"
Twitter also reacted strongly to Archie's America's Got Talent performance.
