Move over, people! THIS is the day we've been waiting for. It's National Bacon Day! Can we use this day to just talk about the most amazing food ever created. I mean, seriously. Why. Is. Bacon. So. Gooooood?!? We can't figure it out. But I'm willing to bet that this edible gold is the reason many people don't go full vegetarian. It's just too good. From wrapping our veggies in it to throwing it in our martinis, we'll find ANY reason to consume this heavenly food.
Even our idioms about the stuff comes with high regard. Did you know the phrase "bring home the bacon" actually isn't about someone bringing home a paycheck? I know. I was surprised too. No, it comes from an English town called Dunmow, circa the twelfth century. There was a church in that town that promised a reward to any married man who agreed not to fight with his wife for a year. But we can thank the Chinese for learning the art of actually making the bacon. Around 1500 B.C. they were curing pork bellies with salt. Some people say that the Romans and Greeks were learning the craft around the same time.
And when we're teaching our kids about Christopher Columbus sailing the ocean blue in 1492, we should be paying homage to the man for bringing pigs to the continent. He wasn't the only one, but he was one of the first. Let's make a song for that, why don't we?
