INXS plans to release a 40th anniversary beefed-up version of their 1985 hit album 'Listen Like Thieves' on May 9, 2025. The new version will include a fresh mix by Giles Martin and Paul Hicks, rare B-sides, plus never-before-heard tracks across three CDs.
The original album reached No. 11 on Billboard, with 'What You Need' climbing into the Top 5. By 1990, INXS had risen to international stardom, drawing 72,000 fans to Wembley Stadium. The performance marked a defining moment in their career and the music scene.
However, things took a different turn when one of the lead singers, Michael Hutchence, died in 1997. The band worked with different singers before calling it quits in 2012. While playing shows with other singers may have rubbed some fans the wrong way, Andrew Farriss told American Songwriter: "To be fair to us is that as people losing someone as talented, dynamic a frontman as Michael, it became really in the forefront of our minds that, OK, we've created this legacy and we own it. And so we'll decide when we want to play or not."
More recently, INXS band members came together in Sydney on October 17, 2023, for a rare public showing. It was their first time appearing together since celebrating 40 years at Sydney's State Theatre in 2017. The meetup was prompted by the remarkable achievement of hitting 4 billion global music streams.
During the event, the surviving members—Garry Gary Beers, Kirk Pengilly, and the Farriss brothers— also unveiled Calling All Nations, a 400-page book blending fan stories with the band's memories. "Reading through it is quite emotional… [to see] just how much we meant to so many of the fans," Pengilly shared with WJJY.
You can pre-order the 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition on the band's website.
