"The Stadium Tour" took longer than expected to happen thanks to the pandemic. However, it seems to be well worth the wait according to recent reports.
According to Pollstar, "The Stadium Tour" featuring Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts is the fourth largest grossing tour in the world right now. Over the course of 14 shows, the average number of tickets sold for each show is 36,513. The average capacity for each show isn't a full sell-out, but it's very close at 98.8 percent.
The biggest number, though, is the average gross for the past 14 shows, which is a whopping $4,962,861.
The only tours to currently out-perform "The Stadium Tour" are the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran. The average number of tickets sold for each of their tours comes in at 60,033, 66,429 and 73,340, respectively. As for the average gross for each tour, those figures come in at $6,369,712, $6,067,972 and $6,310,499, respectively.
Aside from Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee being hampered by a rib injury at the start of the tour, "The Stadium Tour" has gone off without a hitch. This might be due to the strict backstage rules for each of the acts.
In May, Nikki Sixx took to Twitter saying, "It’s been exhausting trying to explain to people why we can’t have guests backstage. Our fans have waited almost 3 years for this tour. If one of us got Covid and had to cancel the show can you imagine the disappointment? We’re not here to take f---ing selfies. This is for the fans."
The Stadium Tour, after being delayed for over two years, finally kicked off last night (June 16) in Atlanta, and the biggest headline from the show came via Tommy Lee.
The drummer didn't perform during the entire Motley Crue set due to sustaining four broken ribs two weeks prior to the tour kickoff. Lee would make it through the first five songs in the Crue's setlist before exiting and having Tommy Clufetos take over, but he would return to the stage to play piano on "Home Sweet Home."
Lee said in a statement, "Man y'all ain't gonna believe this s---! I broke 4 f---ing ribs! But I've been resting and healing and even though the doctor tells me I shouldn't play at all, you know I'm stubborn and I'll beast through the pain every show for as many songs as I can! And have no fear, my boy Tommy Clufetos is here to help me out until I'm back 100%. We've all been waiting years for this moment and there's no way I'm missing this! On with the show!"
Of course, there was also the matter of singer Vince Neil, who received a lot of press leading up to the tour about whether he'd be in proper shape after a disastrous May 2021 solo gig saw him cut his set short after losing his voice. While Neil looked noticeably slimmer and energetic, we'll let you judge his vocals in the fan-shot video below.
Def Leppard also had the daunting task of playing through significant rain during the first half of their set before the weather cleared up.
