Halloween this year was lots of fun. And though it was on a Monday (boo!!), there was still parties and trick-or-treating a plenty. And if you’re one of those people who hates showing up to the party in the same outfit as someone else…well let’s just hope you went a little out of the box for your Halloween costume.

Baby Z was really upset last week when she came home from school. There was another student dressed in the same Halloween costume she had. Problem is, Baby Z chose to be Harley Quinn this year. So it’s kind of a given that she would run into others like her. Movies and social media are huge influencers in what we wear for costumes. And we’re all pretty much watching the same thing.

Unless you’re like me and piece together your Halloween costume from random thrift store items. I do it partially to feel creative and partially to save money. I don’t think I’ve ever donned a costume that was completely store-made. I always have to throw some element on that’s DIY.

In my defense, I have a Bachelor’s in Costume and Set Design. So I have high standards for costuming. And these store-bought ones always have some detail missing or wrong that nobody else would ever notice. But I do. And it ruins the whole thing for me. I know what you’re thinking: “Wendy, why do you spend so much time and energy on something you’ll only wear once?”

Well, friend. That’s an excellent question. And I have an excellent answer…I don’t know. I AM one of six girls in my family. And I always grew up in matching outfits. So maybe it’s just taking back my uniqueness. Whoa…I think I just had an epiphany. Hang on, I have to call my therapist.

Here’s the Top 10 list of the most-popular costumes this year, according to USA Today. How many of them did you see last night?

  • 10. Harley Quinn

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 07: A cosplayer dressed as Harley Quinn during Day 1 of New York Comic Con 2021 at Jacob Javits Center on October 07, 2021 in New York City.

Movie popularity aside, this costume is just fun. I’d totally wear it in public year round if I was more daring.

  • 9. Cowboy

cowboy with a pistol, a gold miner adventure guy in a hat with a gun

Halloween is an excellent time for little boys of all ages to play Cowboy. It’s a surprise there’s no cops or robbers on this list.

  • 8. Cheerleader

Portrait beautiful young asian woman cheerleader smile happy on isolated pink background

This one is a perfect combination of fun, cute and simple to throw together. So it’s a shoo-in for Halloween.

  • 7. Rabbit

Cute caucasian little girl in rabbit costume sitting on bed at home

This one might be popular because it’s so easy. A white outfit, some bunny ears (that we all have lying around from Easter anyway) and voila. Instant costume.

  • 6. Pirate

pair pirates in search of its gold

Another costume that’s just too cool not to do. It’s hard to dress like a pirate and not feel like a bad boy or girl. And let’s face it, that appeals to even the most angelic of us.

  • 5. Fairy

oung blond Caucasian girl wearing a pastel rainbow fairy costume with wings sitting by waterfall in summer garden with rabbit

Fairies have always been a popular choice for costumes. Maybe because they’re kinda everywhere? From Tinkerbell to Galadriel, they show up in so many narratives. Plus, it’s a readily-accessible outfit to make us feel pretty and magical. Obvious choice. 🙂

  • 4. "Stranger Things" Character

I swear the Stranger Things franchise is to this generation what Ghostbusters was to mine. Costumes from the show are everywhere.

  • 3. Dinosaur

Adorable little boy in a crocodile suit

This costume will never go out of style. For a very simple reason: Kids. Dig. Dinosaurs.

  • 2. Spiderman

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - DECEMBER 13: A fan is cosplay is seen at Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: No Way Home" Los Angeles Premiere on December 13, 2021 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images)

Here’s another example of the media influencing our costume choices. With the release of Spiderman: No Way Home, it was inevitable this costume would top the list of most-popular.

  • 1. Witch

Halloween witch. Low key. Computer added dirt, scratches, grain and vignette.

For the second year in a row, the witch is the most-popular Halloween costume. And I’m guessing, like the rabbit costume, it’s because it’s easy. Throw on some black clothes and a hat and you’re good to go.
