Mother’s Day 2023 is right around the corner, this Sunday, May 14th. I am very thankful that my Mom, Janny, is still rockin’ it at 90-years young.

My Dad passed away when I was 14, and my youngest of three sisters was 9. My Mom had to raise all four of us on a medical secretary’s salary. I think she did a fantastic job. Sure, she made mistakes along the way. There isn’t a Mom out there who wouldn’t like a “do-over” on a decision or two. But, looking back, I have a lot of respect for how she managed it all on her own.

We should all have something nice planned to honor and celebrate our mothers. She raised us, sacrificed for us, put up with our nonsense, and gave us direction in life. You don’t have to get her an extravagant gift, although she may like that. But you should make sure your Mom knows that you love and respect her for all she has done for you.

This also gives us the opportunity to point out some rock and pop stars from the 80s who have become great (we hope) mothers. I’m sure there are more than just the seven we listed below. Heck, your Mom might have been rockin’ out to the music from some of these recording starts during the MTV decade while she was raising you.

So, feel free to scroll down and check out seven of the biggest hit-making Moms of the 1980s. You probably won’t be surprised who takes the #1 position, but we thank all of these rockin’ Moms for giving us the gift of awesome music!

  • 7) Susanna Hoffs

The lead singer of The Bangles has been married to filmmaker Jay Roach since 1993. They have two sons. Per Wikipedia, she wrote a novel titled This Bird Has Flown which was released in April 2023. After breaking up in 1989, The Bangles reunited in 2000 and released new albums in 2003 and 2011.

  • 6) Olivia Newton-John

Sadly, this classy lady passed away in August 2022. This singer and actress married actor Matt Lattanzi in 1984.  Their daughter, Chloe Rose, was born in 1986. The song “Physical” became the best-selling single of the 80s, with 10 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

  • 5) Nancy Wilson

Heart guitarist Nancy Wilson and her former husband, screenwriter and director Cameron Crowe, have twin sons, Curtis and William. The song “These Dreams” is one of the few songs by the band Heart which featured Nancy on lead vocals. It went all the way to #1 in 1986.

  • 4) Belinda Carlisle

The former lead singer of the Go-Go’s went solo after the band broke up in 1984. She married political operative and film producer Morgan Mason in 1986. He appears in the video for this #1 song, “Heaven Is A Place On Earth.” The video was directed by actress Diane Keaton. The couple’s son, James Duke Mason, was born in 1992.

  • 3) Cyndi Lauper

This award-winning singer and actress has been married to actor David Thornton since 1991. She has won Grammy Awards, Emmy Awards, and Tony Awards during her illustrious career. The couple have one son named Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper, born in 1997.

  • 2) Pat Benatar

Pat, and her husband of 40+ years, Neil Giraldo, have two daughters named Hana and Haley. She had quite a start to her career, earning the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance four consecutive years, from 1980-1983. Pat Benatar was finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2022.

  • 1) Madonna

The undisputed “Queen of Pop,” Madonna set a record with 16 consecutive top 5 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 during the 1980’s. That is a record which still stands to this day. The Guinness Book of World Records lists her as the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She has six children who will be celebrating with her on Mother’s Day.
