It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years since the Lord of the Rings franchise was in movie theaters.
The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001 and instantly gained a huge fan following. The Two Towers dropped a year later, in 2002, to many anxiously awaiting movie-goers. And the final film in the trilogy, Return of the King, was filling the seats in 2003.
The movies were adaptations of J.R. Tolkien‘s fantasy novels and more than put Peter Jackson into the winner’s circle of film directors. They also immortalized actors like Elijah Wood, Ian McKellan, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler and Sean Astin.
Now Warner Brothers is rereleasing the final film in theaters across North America.
To celebrate the franchise’s 20th anniversary, Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King will play in select theaters for a limited time. When it was first released, the film won an impressive 11 Oscars. And picked up $1.1 billion at the box office. Now those who didn’t get the chance to see one of the masterpieces in theaters will be able to experience the magic.
And it gets even better. The 20th anniversary showing will be the 260-minute extended edition of the film. That’s four hours and ten minutes of Frodo and Sam traipsing through Middle Earth. This one wasn’t even in theaters the first time. It was only released on DVD.
Regal and Cinemark are participating in the campaign and showing the film in their theaters. Cinemark has an added bonus for fans in the form of an introduction from Elijah Wood.
The film will play just two dates, April 13th & April 19th. Tickets are on sale and it’s anticipated that they will sell quickly. So it’s being recommended that die hard fans keep checking their favorite ticket outlet so they don’t miss out.
