They started in 1973 Rockford, Illinois. In fact, April 1st was declared “Cheap Trick Day” by the Illinois Senate. The band was started by their lead guitarist, Rick Nielsen. Nielsen is an avid vintage guitarist, which is why the band is known for having such cool guitars onstage. They got their name from a concert they attended, where they were not impressed with the band, and accused them of using every cheap trick in the book to pull off their mediocre shows. They’re on MTV’s list of “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.” While they’re definitely known in the US, it’s Japan where they are ultra-megastars. The Japan press calls Cheap Trick “The American Beatles”. But Cheap Trick’s fame in Japan also made them stars in the US. Their live album from their tour in Japan, Cheap Trick at Budokan, went triple platinum in the United States. When their fame started to waiver, their manager forced them to work with local songwriters to make more music. That lead to the band’s first #1 single, The Flame, and that album, Lap of Luxury, went platinum in 1988 and was considered the band’s comeback album.
