Las Vegas Aviators Beloved Finn The Bat Dog Has Died
One of the most famous members of the Las Vegas Aviators family has died. Finn the Bat Dog.
Very sadly, Finn, the Aviators’ black Labrador retriever Bat Dog, who retired in April, passed away a few weeks ago, from cancerous tumors.
The Las Vegas Aviators announced Finn’s passing Monday on social media.
Fred Hassen was Finn’s owner, and person. He said, “He loved to swim and he got to do that nearly every day in retirement. He went really quick, so it’s a good thing the Aviators did the retirement ceremony for a nice send-off.”
Finn The Bat Dog Retired In April
I was at Finn’s retirement game, and it was really fun. Aviators GM, Chuck Johnson, gave Finn a gold bat for his retirement. It was quite a send off. The line was so long to get a picture with the famous bat dog. So Finn just walked the line, so everyone could pet him, and maybe grab a selfie.
Finn led the way in bringing a really fun new new entertainment element to minor league baseball. But he didn’t just pick up bats – which he did really fast. He did a lot of other things.
I saw Finn work several games. He would bring water to umpires, sit on fire hydrants, jump over chairs – and he enjoyed every minute of it. And so did Aviators fans.
The Las Vegas Aviators Had A Viral Superstar
A lot of Finn videos went viral. Search online for Finn the Bat Dog and you’ll find a whole lot of fun video. Some with hundred of thousands of views.
One video in particular shows one of the biggest “boo’s” for an umpire. Finn went to retrieve a bat, but the umpire had picked it up and tossed it while Finn was trying to do his job. It didn’t stop him – he still ran after the bat, and picked it up – as most of the crowd boo’ed the umpire. That video now has over a million *combined* views.
Finn usually worked the first three innings of a game, as a bat dog, after each batter. But his fan base was growing constantly, so he became quite the entertainer!
Finn was treated like the star that he was. He had his own locker room – with a TV, and a shower to keep him cool during those hot summer months in Las Vegas. And in 2019, he was honored with his own bobblehead.
His retirement game was in April, and it was quite a send off. The line was long to get a picture with the famous bat dog. So Finn just walked the line, so everyone could pet him, and maybe grab a selfie.
Rest In Peace, Dear Finn
Tributes to the beloved Bat Dog started pouring in online, when fans heard of Finn’s passing.
Clark County also paid tribute to Finn. “We hope you’re getting all the treats and belly rubs over the Rainbow Bridge,” the county posted on its own website this week.
Finn may be gone, but it looks like there is a new bat dog on the horizon. Ruin, a Belgian Malinois that helped Finn in the past couple years, will be stepping up to the plate in the 2025 season.
Finn the Bat Dog – gone, but never forgotten. Rest in peace, good boy.
