1 Enormous Sinkhole Happens On Illinois Soccer Field And Is Caught On Tape
We’ve all seen sink holes happen all over the world. Some small and some enormous. We usually only see the aftermath and rarely see it as it happens. Well that has changed.
That’s Not Supposed To Be There
A soccer field in Alton, Illinois was the victim of a massive sink hole the other day. The soccer field is built over an operating limestone mine, located in the southern part of Illinois. Not only did the ground give way, it took down a field lamp pole and left a huge hole in the middle of the field.

Luckily no one was hurt or on the field when it happened. Mayor David Goins told The Alton Telegraph “No one was on the field at the time and no one was hurt, and that’s the most important thing.”
Look At The Size Of That Sinkhole
The sink hole was pretty massive. They’re estimating that its about 100 feet wide and about 50 feet deep. For safety reasons, all parks and roads around the field have been closed. According to the New Frontier Materials Bluff City, the sinkhole happened because of “surface subsidence” and the underground mine below.

When incidents like this occur, it needs to be reported to numerous agencies. The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration being one of them. The mine below the field is about 170 feet under.
As of now, the area will remain off limits to anyone while experts examine and inspect the mine. They’ll also figure out how to repair and fix the sinkhole. Michael Haynes, the city’s parks and recreation director told KMOV-TV that he doesn’t know how the sinkhole will be fixed but they are working with other agencies to figure out how stable the ground and areas around are.
