Bruce Springsteen is an Emmy Award short of being an EGOT winner. Believe it or not, he could secure that elusive entertainment honor thanks to his cameo appearance in the final season of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm.
According to Variety, the series submitted 35 different nominations for the upcoming Primetime Emmys. As expected, Outstanding Comedy Series is one of the nominations, along with various acting nominations for Larry David, J.B. Smoove, Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, Cheryl Hines, Tracey Ullman and the late Richard Lewis.
A significant portion of the nomination submissions is in the guest acting categories. In total, 15 people who appeared in the final season of Curb were submitted for Outstanding Guest Actor/Actress. Springsteen is among that group of 15. Other names submitted by Curb for Outstanding Guest Actor/Actress include Steve Buscemi, Ted Danson, Saverio Guerra, Sean Hayes, Greg Kinnear, Conan O’Brien, Jerry Seinfeld, Vince Vaughn, Allison Janney, Ellia English, Sanaa Lathan, Sienna Miller, Keyla Monterroso Mejia and Stephanie Styles.
Springsteen's Previous Emmy Nominations
If Springsteen snags an Outstanding Gust Actor nomination, it would be his first acting Emmy nomination. However, The Boss has three Primetime Emmy Award nominations to his name. Per IMDb, Springsteen's first Emmy nomination came in 2001 for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band: Live in New York City.
The second nomination came in 2009 for Outstanding Special Class - Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs for his halftime show performance at Super Bowl XLIII. The third nomination came in 2019 for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) for Springsteen on Broadway.
As for Springsteen's other EGOT-related honors, he previously won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Streets of Philadelphia" in 1994, a Special Tony Award for Springsteen on Broadway in 2018 and 20 Grammy Awards over the course of his career.
Springsteen's New Concert Documentary
As reported last week, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be the subject of a new concert documentary from Disney+ and Hulu.
Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band is slated to premiere in October. The doc will contain "unprecedented, behind-the-scenes access" to The Boss' 2023-24 tour with the E Street Band, including rehearsal footage and a look at how Springsteen crafts a setlist.
The documentary's announcement boasts, "In this way, it serves as an essential and never-before-seen chapter in an autobiographical series spanning Springsteen’s memoir 'Born to Run,' 'Springsteen on Broadway,' and the films 'Western Stars' and 'Letter to You.'"
Directing Road Diary is Thom Zimny, who has been a longtime collaborator of Springsteen's and has also directed Springsteen on Broadway and Western Stars. As expected, the concert documentary will feature unique, professionally shot footage of Springsteen's current tour with the E Street Band, as well as sitdown interviews and commentary from the band.
