UNLV Runnin’ Rebel Great Passes Away At 59
He was one of the greats and fans were very sad to hear the news of a UNLV Runnin’ Rebel passing away at the age of 59. Jarvis Basnight played with the intensity of inspired the heritage of that program at the time. It was a great time to be a Runnin’ Rebel fan, the Thomas & Mack was rockin’ each and every game. Highly ranked and anticipating a National title, Basnight and his teammates were the toast of the town back in the mid to late 80s.
The Mike & Carla Morning Show remembered Basnight during the short sports wrap earlier this morning. Channel 3 reports on the basketball legend’s passing, detailing his college career in Las Vegas. To give you an idea of how big the teams he played on were during his time here, names like Armon Gilliam, Mark Wade, Freddie Banks, Eldridge Hudson, just to name a few. That team truly embodied the word “Runnin'” when it came to UNLV basketball.
UNLV Runnin’ Rebel Great Will Be Missed
During his Vegas stay, Jarvis was a standout in all facets of the game. Shooting, blocking, and rebounding all were a part of his game. To give you an idea of how good he was, the report includes some of his stats putting him at #2 in shooting percentage, #1 in blocking and rebounding that year the team went to the Final Four…1987-88.
That year, they went into the Final Four with only one regular season loss. The had lost to Oklahoma that year and it was a tough loss losing by only one point. According to an article from UPI, the loss was not without controversy. And if you remember back then, the Rebels and Oklahoma had a very intense rivalry over a few years in the 80s.
But the team was still highly ranked and they had finally got the program back to the Final Four. However, according to The Daily Hoosier, they met up with the Hoosiers from Indiana. Lead by coach Bobby Knight, it was a great game, only to lose 97-93. Indiana would go on to win the National Championship.
Jarvis Basnight was a standout on every level and will be dearly missed by Rebel fans throughout Las Vegas!
