Las Vegas Businesses Want Their Money Back From Formula One
Las Vegas wants compensation from losses due to Formula One race.
Businesses Want Their Money Back
Las Vegas businesses say they lost millions of dollars because of Formula One road closures. Customers couldn’t get into restaurants, and various other businesses, and they lost money. Now, they want to recover some of their losses.
President and CEO of Mayo and Associates, Lisa Mayo-DeRiso, has become a strong voice in the fight. She would like to start a small business recovery fund to reimburse businesses. Owners and managers say that the reality did not match their expectations. The estimated loss, according to the Las Vegas Review Journal, was well into the twenty million dollar range.
Some of these businesses include Battista’s Hole in the Wall, Ellis Island, And Jays Market.
Crossing The Las Vegas Strip Was A Nightmare
As a resident of Las Vegas, it’s tough to get from point A to point B almost anytime. But Formula One construction, and road closures affected the city on so many levels.
We all have friends who work on or near the Las Vegas strip. So many were unable to get to work on time. So many in the service industry were called out because of cancelled reservations, or no access to parking – so, no business!
A large portion of Las Vegas strip business comes from foot traffic. But even that was paralyzed by all of the detours, and bridges, and walls that were built for Formula One.
Super Bowl Construction Will Be Smoother
The Super Bowl will take place in Las Vegas in just about a month. The planning for that has been much smoother, and thought out – at least in this writer’s opinion. Walkways are being constructed so that those who are walking, CAN walk along the Las Vegas Strip, and in the Allegiant Stadium area.
You can read Mayo-DeRiso’s full letter here, but the last sentence sums it up: “F1 stood at this podium and asked you, or really the taxpayers, for $40 million dollars to share in road paving. You have not paid that money. “Now those businesses would like to be compensated for something they had NO control over.
