The Voice Of Mario Is Stepping Down, Hitting The Road
We all know the famous line from Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 “It’s A Me! Mario!” That famous line is voiced by Charles Martinet. Martinet voiced Mario in Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo from 1996 until today. Well, that is all coming to an end . . . sort of.
What’s Next For Mario?
Voice actor Charles Martinet announced along side Nintendo that he is officially retiring from voicing Mario. But this won’t be the end of you hearing Charles Martinet from doing the voice in person. Nope!
Martinet will be taking over a newly created role in Nintendo’s world. He will be taking on the role of “Mario Ambassador,” where he’ll travel the world to share the story of Mario with everyone, according to the statements.

Martinet replied to the statement Nintendo put out on X — the reincarnation of Twitter — “My new adventure begins! You are all numba one in my heart #woohoo!!!!!”
You Also Voiced Who?
Aside from voicing the famous Mario, Martinet also voiced Mario’s brother Luigi! And the extension from the Mario story, he also voiced Wario and Waluigi, according to USA Today.
The release of “The Super Mario Bros.” movie saw someone other than Martinet playing the voice of the beloved Mario character. When news hit that Martinet wasn’t the voice, the video game world went into a frenzy! Instead, producers went with Chris Pratt, who did a pretty good job and left many people happy with his performance. But, they made sure to include Martinet in the film. Martinet voiced Mario and Luigi’s father in the movie.
Those Famous Lines
There are so many different games featuring Mario, and Martinet was there for all of them since 1996. Mario Kart, Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Party are just to name a few of the imperative games that Martinet voiced. According to the New York Times, Martinet made lines like “Mamma Mia,” “Wahoo,” Let’s-a-go,” and of course the very popular line that is the first thing you hear on Super Mario 64, which is “It’s-a me, Mario!”
So, while you won’t be hearing his voice in future Mario releases, you will still be able to see him out and about sharing the love of Mario to the world!
