If you have luggage that you don't need anymore, don't throw it away.

Donate it instead. To the Shade Tree. The local nonprofit is asking the community of greater Las Vegas to gather their suitcases, duffel bags and backpacks and bring them to their shelter. They will use the gently used or new luggage to provide their visitors with an essential item that many don't have.

The ShadeTreeis a 24-hour emergency shelter for domestic violence and human trafficking survivors and their children. Often these people in need show up with little or no possessions. And many who have belongings with them don't have a reliable bag to put things in.

The Shade Tree says that many of their clients show up to the shelter with everything they own in a trash bag. CEO Linda Perez believes that giving them a piece of luggage instead is just the first step to restoring their dignity. Something that is often stolen from victims of human trafficking and domestic violence. Perez believes this simple act starts the healing process for victims and helps them both physically and emotionally.

The Shade Tree is requesting donations from the local community to help their mission. Donations needed include new backpacks for adults and new duffel bags that have functional wheels. Also needed are new or gently used suitcases or other forms of luggage with functional wheels.

Donations can be made at the Shade Tree's main location. They are located at 1 West Owens Avenue in North Las Vegas. Which is on Owens Avenue between the I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard. It is requested that those donating make an appointment to do so. You can do that online at the Shade Tree's easy donation website. Or you can email for an appointment to donations@theshadetree.org.
