If you were at Monday's (May 15) Oakland A's game, it looked like you were at a minor league game. But, you were at a major league one.
The Oakland Coliseum was, well, not filled. Not at all.
Oakland A's Game Attendance
According to Sports Illustrated, the A's game on Monday drew only 2,064 fans. That's the lowest number of fans at an Oakland A game since Sept. 19, 1979, when only 1,037 fans showed up.
All season, attendance has been low. The reasons are many. As Sports Illustrated explains, "Franchise owner John Fisher has refused to invest in building anything close to a competitive roster. The A's have the lowest payroll in baseball, and not surprisingly, Oakland has the worst record in the majors." That's not to mention that, of course, the team is looking to move to Las Vegas. Why put your heart and soul into a team that's going to move soon? That's like finding the love of your life and dating, even though you know that person is destined to move far away soon. Okay, long-distance relationships can work, so maybe that's not the best analogy. But, you get it.
The league average attendance for the current season is 26,460 per game. The A's are averaging 9,129. Let's hope it shapes up before they make a move to Las Vegas, if and when that happens.
