More Americans Blame News Media For This Problem
A recent poll has either revealed, or confirmed, that more Americans blame the news media for what many consider to be a major problem in our nation.
According to an article written by David Klepper of the Associated Press which was posted on ABCNews.Go.com, nearly 75% of adults in the United States blame the news media for dividing our country along political lines. The poll goes on to detail that almost half of those surveyed “say they have little to no trust in the media’s ability to report the news fairly and accurately.”
Of the 1,002 American adults surveyed by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, approximately 20% say the news media is doing a good job of protecting democracy in our country, while approximately 40% say they are doing more to hurt democracy. Another 40% would not commit to either of those statements.
So, where do you sit on the spectrum of “trust” when it comes to our nation’s news media? Do you still watch television news? Do you prefer local news programming rather than the major broadcast networks and dedicated news channels? Have you discontinued watching television news in favor of doing your own research online? Do you trust social media information more than broadcast media reports?
There are no correct answers, only personal preferences. But it certainly appears from polls like this one that the majority of Americans continue to feel that the cable news channels, social media news and information websites, and politicians, are responsible for not only spreading misinformation, but also for doing very little to stop the spread of “false news.”
