The historical origins of a burrito is a contested biography filled with arguments and discord. However, many culinary scholars traced the birth of the burrito to northern Mexico during the 16th century. According to USA Today, the burrito may have arose from the cross-pollination of regional Mexican food and Spanish conquistador cooking preparations and food.
The Mexican Revolution created a need for portable and filling foods, making the burrito a possible popular option. However, the dish spread to the areas that eventually turned into California, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. It seems that the invention of the burrito resembles “fire” as Chef Minerva Orduño Rincón in The Arizona Republic, wrote.
“. . . it most likely sparked in multiple places at once and then spread,” Rincón wrote.
Although the history of the burrito is immensely debated upon, there’s no doubt that multiple factors and different cultures have influenced the art of the burrito.
