You have probably seen illegal street racing and trick drivers while navigating the Las Vegas Valley roadways. Some of you may have even experienced getting caught in illegal street takeovers in Southern Nevada. All three situations are extremely dangerous for those involved in the illegal activity, and those of us who want to get to our destination alive and uninjured.
According to an article written by KTNV Staff on KTNV.com, Las Vegas Metro Police Department is teaming up with the Clark County Office of Transportation and the Nevada Department of Transportation to install “safety transverse rumble strips” in the roadways where a great deal of this illegal activity takes place. These strips alert drivers to slow down. And, if any of these illegal trick drivers or street racers decide to pull stunts or race through the rumble strips, they will do serious damage to their tires and wheels.
One spot that has been very popular with street racers and trick drivers is the intersection of U.S. 93 and Grand Valley Parkway. This is a rather remote intersection about two miles west of I-15 in the northeast section of Clark County out past Apex. There have been illegal street takeovers in this area with hundreds of cars blocking traffic as racing and stunt driving takes place. This illegal activity actually impedes semi-trucks attempting to pass through on their way to the more populated portions of Las Vegas and Clark County to deliver necessary goods.
Per the KTNV.com article, some participants in these street takeovers have even hopped up on to the semi-trucks or have slashed the truck’s tires. Law enforcement officials with Metro Police Department pointed out that projects like this may not eliminate these dangerous and illegal activities, but it will deter these roadway criminals. LVMPD has even set up a new unit which will focus on deterring street racing. They’re calling the unit “RAID,” or “Racing Apprehension and Intervention Detail.”
Let’s hope their new projects work well enough to curb this type of dangerous behavior in the Las Vegas Valley.
