Well, it really isn’t a reason to throw a party, but February 28th is “World Spay Day.” Whether you are a cat-lover or not, there are many health-oriented reasons to have your feline spayed or neutered.
According to an article written by Layla Morgan Wilde on CatWisdom101, your feline will live a longer, healthier life if you spay or neuter them early. This is a normal operation performed on cats in most shelters who are up for adoption.
The most important reason to spay or neuter your cat is to prevent overpopulation. I didn’t know this, but Wilde’s article states that there are currently approximately 70,000 stray cats in the U.S.A. alone! One unspayed female cat can be responsible for up to 20,000 descendants within a five year period. That’s quite a family tree.
Not only are these operations necessary to stem overpopulation, cut down on disease transmission, and reduce wildlife predation, but spaying or neutering your cat will keep them healthier throughout their lives. Wilde’s web posting explains: “For female cats, spaying can prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which can be fatal. For male cats, neutering can prevent testicular cancer and certain prostate problems. In addition, spaying and neutering can reduce the risk of certain behavioral problems, such as marking and roaming.”
Male cats can be released back to their homes pretty quickly after the neutering surgery. However, for female felines, the recovery takes longer and it is important to make sure you limit your pet’s activities during the rehabilitation period. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions closely to ensure a smooth recovery for your pet.
If you have questions or concerns about spaying or neutering your cat, be sure to consult a veterinarian. It sure looks like it hurts, and probably does, but it is the best thing you can do for the long-term health of your feline pet.
