Oakland A’s: Possible Move To Las Vegas Still Uncertain
Talks continue between Major League Baseball, the management of the Oakland A’s, and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, regarding a possible move by the A’s to Las Vegas. However, the team’s future home stadium site is still uncertain.
According to an article written by Howard Stutz on TheNevadaIndependent.com, Oakland’s Major League Baseball team continues a search to find a new stadium in which to play. Their search has been going on for about two years, and the main sites they are considering are here in Las Vegas, and on the waterfront in Oakland.Â
The proposed site in Oakland includes about 56 acres of land near that city’s Jack London Square. However, plans were put on hold last fall when that city missed a key funding deadline. Then, more recently, “the U.S. Department of Transportation rejected a nearly $183 million application by the city through the agencyâs Mega Grant Program,” per The Nevada Independent article.
Sites being considered in Las Vegas which were identified in Stutz’s article include land near the Tropicana Hotel Casino on the south end of The Strip, and on the north end of the resort corridor, the Las Vegas Festival Grounds along Sahara Avenue. However, the Oakland A’s face another hurdle here in Southern Nevada. According to Stutz’s article, an emailed statement from a spokesperson for newly-elected Governor Joe Lombardo said he would not approve a plan to raise taxes in Nevada to fund a new baseball stadium in the Las Vegas area.
In recent talks, and discussions over a year ago, both current Governor Lombardo, and former Governor Steve Sisolak, both alluded to the fact that there are “a variety of existing economic development programs in the state.â Stutz’s article quotes Greg Bertolin, a spokesperson for the GOED as stating: âThe Governorâs Office of Economic Development stands ready to work with local jurisdictions to see what possibilities there are for different structures.”
So, the Oakland A’s search for a new home stadium continues, with Las Vegas still being in the mix. The team has been playing in the Oakland Coliseum since 1968, and their current lease expires after the 2024 MLB season.
