Celebrating: National ‘Microwave Day’ Today
Mark your calendar so you don’t miss it next year, but today we celebrate National “Microwave Day”! So, The Mike & Carla Morning Show wanted to know what your favorite food is to pop in the microwave to heat up, cook up, and then dive into?
We might want to go back and actually talk about how the microwave came about. Truth be told, it was totally by accident back in 1945 by an engineer working on a radar project. The guy’s name was Percy Spencer and as he worked on this project, he noticed the candy bar in his pocket was melting and wa-la, he came up with the microwave! Of course, there’s a lot more to the story and it gets petty technical, but that’s the short version.
It was finally introduced to homemakers ten years later in 1955, but the were huge and very costly…not everyone could afford them! Back in the early 50s, the weighed almost 750lbs and cost over $5000.00, however, as time went on, the cost came down and so did the size. Later in the 50s, the first home models, the price sunk to $450.00 for a microwave, but considering it was the 50s, it was still considered expensive. Even if you look at the cost of a microwave in 1980, the cost had yet to come down that much costing on average about $425.00.
Today, they are smaller and more affordable with over 90% of U.S. homes having at least one microwave in their home. Now you see them everywhere…at home, at work, on the road and even in convenient stores and restaurants!
But of course now we all enjoy the convenience of a microwave in everyway possible! For breakfast, lunch and dinner…for re-heating leftovers, making a cup of a coffee and so much more. But when it comes to foods we love nuking…so if you have a minute, listen to the segment from this morning and enjoy!
