My Mother Celebarates Her 90th Birthday
We celebrated my Mother’s 90th birthday on Saturday. We had a big party in her honor with all four of her kids, her son-in-law, and daughter-in-law, in attendance. We had a fantastic time and we toasted her quite often on this momentous occasion.
But amidst all of the laughter and fun, I had to wonder: Imagine the things she has seen, and the historical events she has lived through, in those ninety years! Pretty amazing when you stop and think about it.
She was born into The Great Depression, which was followed by the attack on Pearl Harbor, World War II in both the European and Pacific Theaters. The Korean War soon followed, and then The Cold War with the U.S.S.R. The Vietnam War in the 60s and early 70s, The Gulf War of the early 90s, the 9-11 Terrorist Attacks and the Second Gulf War and the war in Afghanistan. That’s a lot of war in ninety years.
She saw our nation rocked by assassinations during the 1960s; first John F. Kennedy, then Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and soon after that, Robert Kennedy.
On a more positive note, she saw the pandemonium which surrounded pop music sensations Frank Sinatra, then Elvis Presley, and then The Beatles. She witnessed the growth of the aviation industry from propeller planes, which only carried a couple of people, into “The Jet Age,” which morphed into “The Space Race” with the Soviet Union. She experienced the joy and wonder of watching Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon, and felt the soul-engulfing sadness of the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster.
Through all of this history, she also managed to raise four children who are all healthy and happy today, and she pretty much did it on her own after her husband, our Father, passed away when we were kids.
So “Happy 90th Birthday” Mom! You’ve lived an incredible life and you should be very proud. We hope to celebrate many more birthdays with you in the future.
