The annual Project Homeless Connect returned recently to serve Las Vegas valley's homeless, food insecure, and low-income population. The event was in partnership with Nevada Homeless Alliance and Touro University Nevada, who served as the medical partner. Touro University Nevada is the state's largest medical school and its only school of osteopathic medicine. It also offers Nevada's largest Physician Assistant program.
Faculty and students from Touro's Physician Assistant program, led by Dr. Rebecca Edgeworth, were on site at the event. They provided general wellness exams and screenings, administered vaccines, and provided blood pressure checks and mammograms. Touro University Nevada and Dr. Edgeworth also coordinated with other health providers at Project Homeless Connect for additional medical and dental services.
Project Homeless Connect, with the support from more than a dozen agencies in Southern Nevada, offered housing and food assistance, job training programs, senior services and dental and vision screenings to qualified residents. This is the 30th year for this event, traditionally held at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas. This year it was moved to the Silver Nugget Casino & Event Center.
Dr. Edgeworth was the guest on our Talking Solutions public affairs show to talk about this event. In this interview, she explains why the event was moved to the Silver Nugget and what the bigger venue means for the people being served. Dr. Edgeworth extends the invite, in this conversation, to anyone in Las Vegas who doesn't have regular access to the resources being provided. This group can include the homeless, uninsured or underinsured.
Dr. Edgeworth also explains that the event, chaired by Nevada Homeless Alliance, focuses on "same-day services". These services include those for pets, job needs, housing, clothing and food. Medical services include partnerships from HPN, Anthem, and Nevada Health Centers, in addition to Touro University Nevada.
