When someone is accused of a crime, they're given the "right to an attorney". But what about people who just need help with things like divorce, immigration, or consumer fraud? Many people in Southern Nevada can't afford an attorney for these things. That's why the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is providing free legal services in Clark County.

The free legal services offered through the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada include a variety of programs. These programs help victims of domestic violence, victims of crime, victims of consumer fraud, and children in the foster care system. There are also free legal services in the form of self-help classes on divorce, custody, immigration and more.

Many residents of Southern Nevada have benefitted from LACSN's "Ask A Lawyer" program, which provides a free 15-minute consultation with a licensed attorney. There are times set aside for small claims questions, and questions about probate, child support, and tenant rights. Debt collection and family law are also covered in these sessions.

Another of the free legal services now being offered through the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is for criminal record sealing. The center helps with the entire process for someone to get past records sealed. Which allows the person to legally deny having been arrested when they're filling out a form for employment.

I had the pleasure of speaking with the Executive Director of the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, Barbara E Buckley, Esq. Barbara explained many of the programs in depth and who they can help in Southern Nevada.

In her interview with me, Barbara also talked about the dire need for pro bono legal volunteers. According to Access to Justice, only 24% of legal needs in Southern Nevada are going unmet. The reason is directly related to the lack of pro bono lawyers volunteering. The areas that need pro bono help include child advocacy, family law, domestic violence victim advocacy, elder assistance and consumer exploitation.
