November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. Nathan Adelson Hospice was a guest on Talking Solutions recently to talk about how they do hospice and palliative care differently in Las Vegas. First, they’re the only non-profit hospice in Southern Nevada. Second, they have unique programs that focus on more than just the physical aspect of life for their clients.
Nathan Adelson Hospice is the largest and longest-established hospice in Southern Nevada. And they pride themselves on their innovative approaches and services for our community. These include Paws @ Home, which gifts a robotic puppy or kitten to clients. These gifts give clients the comfort of having an animal without the responsibility of pet-owning.
Nathan Adelson also offers Cardiac Care. The organization currently cares for 49.2% of all cardiac hospice patients in Southern Nevada. And they save their clients, on average, $15K for their total cost of care. The hospice also offers an Advanced Lung Program, Home Hospice Care and Advance Care Planning/Deciding Tomorrow Today programs. Nathan Adelson does more RN visits in the last 3 and 7 days of life than the County and State average. And their overall hospitalization rate is 1.45%, compared to the county average of 4.24%.
End-of-life care for their clients isn’t the only focus of Nathan Adelson Hospice. The organization considers everyone affected by the last days of a loved one’s life. For this reason, they offer programs for family members of their clients. Camp Erin and Families In Need are two such programs. They also have services for veterans, such as the Veteran Food Program launching in Pahrump as well as Veteran Pinning Ceremonies.
Chief Operating Officer and Chief Nursing Officer, Angela Collins was a guest this month on Talking Solutions. Angela talked about the programs the hospice offers as well as the statistics in our community that supports their mission. Angela also spoke about the Before I Die Wall and it’s importance in our community. The original air date for this show was November 13, 2022.
