The beauty and serenity of Red Rock Canyon has been ruined lately by a string of automobile break-ins in the conservation area’s parking lots.

According to an article posted by Denise Rosch on News3LV.com, the Bureau of Land Management reported that there were as many as ten car break-ins in a single weekend back in early October, although only five were reported to authorities. John Asselin, who is with the BLM Public Affairs Department, says that there are organized groups of thieves committing these crimes. “They go out and rent a car in a fake name, they’re hard to track.”

Per Rosch’s article, Asselin goes on to say that sometimes these thieves use frequency jammers which block your key fob from actually locking your doors. He recommends you make sure you hear the beep or the honk to make sure your car is locked before you leave the parking lot. Or, be even more safe, and lock your doors manually.

Red Rock Canyon is a beautiful and serene conservation area for Las Vegas locals who love to get away from the bright lights of The Strip and Fremont Street and get back to nature. The wildlife, the desert vegetation, and the awesome mountainous panorama provide many of us with the perfect backdrop for a hike, a bike ride, a run, or just sitting and observing from on top of a rock.

When you park your vehicle in one of the parking lots, and you throw a purse or a knapsack into the trunk, you are probably not thinking about who may be watching you carefully. These thieves blend in with the crowds. They wait for you to leave the area. Then they can quickly break into a vehicle and steal all the valuables.

So, if you’re planning to enjoy the sights and sounds of Red Rock Canyon in the near future, it might be best to leave most of your valuables at home. Be vigilant.
