The federal government recently announced its plan to forgive student loan debt for qualified federal student loan borrowers. And the application for forgiveness has officially been released. The government also announced the resumption of federal student loan payments starting in the beginning of 2023.
This extension was put in place to allow borrowers to budget before resuming their loan payments. This is especially helpful since inflation is so rampant lately. The extension will help borrowers plan ahead for their payments and help avoid late payments or unnecessary defaults. The extension will also help better prepare borrowers by giving them time to consider their repayment options in the midst of rising interest rates.
Brian Walsh is a Student Loan Expert and Manager of Financial Planning at SoFipersonal finance company. I got to chat with Brian to discuss the upcoming loan forgiveness. We discussed the financial jargon that might confuse some of us. And the decision-making responsibilities we all need to consider before the repayments begin.
Some tips that Brian shared with me included how to find the best financial plan for your income. We also discussed how a borrower can prepare now for the repayments that will start in 2023. Brian mentioned how exploring other federal programs and consolidation options is a good idea. Brian also warned against consolidating too early. Student loan refinancing options was also discussed.
If you have a federal student loan, listen to this interview before those repayments begin. Brian gives vital tips to help with the process. In fact, did you know you can qualify for $20K forgiveness if you had a Pell Grant any time during your borrowing period? Brian fills us in on that and much more.
And don’t forget to fill out your application. It’s out now!
Powerball Hits $1 Billion; Tips To Winning The Jackpot
Thousands of people were lining up at the Primm Lottery Store this past weekend to grab lottery tickets. Since that is the closest place Las Vegas residents can go to buy a ticket, many of us flock to that spot whenever there’s a jackpot worth the drive.
This weekend the Powerball jackpot was at $825 million. Which makes this particular draw the second-largest in United States history. Many local residents stood in line for over an hour to get their hands on some winning tickets, ktnv.com reported. And since the jackpot was so high, many were coming in with various strategies to ensure their success.
Some were focusing on past number patterns when they chose their numbers for their tickets. Other strategies involved buying non-consecutive tickets to make sure the numbers were very different. That’s what Las Vegas resident Frank Lewis did. Lewis said “I play quickpicks, but I wait in between the lines. So I’ll ask for [a ticket], and wait a couple seconds and then ask for another one so the numbers are a lot different” (ktnv.com).
If you missed buying tickets this weekend, you might want to think about delegating the Halloween festivities to someone else and get down to the Primm Lottery Store tonight. Nobody won the Powerball jackpot on Saturday. And now it’s up to $1 Billion.
The drawing is tonight at 10:59pm. If someone wins this time around, it will be the fifth-largest payout in United States lottery history, as reported by cnbc.com. Even if you opt for the significantly less valuable lump sum, you’re still walking away with more money than most of us will see in a lifetime.
So if you are heading down to Primm tonight, maybe consider these tips (courtesy of lotterycritic.com) for winning the lottery from Richard Lustig. He’s the guy that made headlines for winning the lottery 7 times. Obviously there’s no guarantee about winning, but Lustig might be worth listening to. If you do play, good luck! Don’t forget about us commoners when you’re rich. 🙂
Lustig says to never buy quick-pick tickets and don’t let the computer pick the numbers for you. Always pick your own.
2. Use The Same Number Combination
Lustig says to use the same number combination every single time you play. This increases the odds of that combination winning. BUT stop using it once it hits.
3. Reinvest Your Winnings
Lustig is a big advocate for treating your lottery playing like it’s an entrepreneurial venture. He recommends investing at least 33% of your winnings back into your play.
4. Buy A Lot Of Tickets At Once
Lustig was very outspoken about the importance of buying multiple tickets at once. He says it greatly increases the odds of winning.
5. Don't Choose Consecutive Numbers
This tip comes from the Village Voice. They say, “if you play a lottery with five winning numbers and you have to choose until numbers 55. The total numbers must be between 104 and 176. Studies have shown that 70% of lottery jackpots have sums that fall in this range.”
