Las Vegas Natives Head To World Series
Las Vegas may not have a Major League Baseball franchise (yet), but we do have two Major League Baseball players who hail from our fair city who are headed to the 2022 World Series.
The National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies will be taking on American League Champion Houston Astros in the Fall Classic, which begins Friday in Houston. The Phillies’ lineup will include two Las Vegas natives: Designated hitter and NLCS Most Valuable Player Bryce Harper (#3), and shortstop, Bryson Stott (#5).
These two are good friends and teammates even though they are five years apart in age. According to an article posted by Justine Verastigue on KTNV.com, the two players are also proud to represent Las Vegas. Verastigue quotes Stott as saying: “Kinda just being from the same city and playing with one of your best friends on the biggest stage is something not a lot of people could say they ever do.” He went on to say, “Just being able to represent Vegas with him, I mean I see a bunch of Vegas shirts all the time out here.”
Harper, 30, won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2012, and the National League’s Most Valuable Player Award in 2015 at the age of 22, the youngest player to ever win it, per Wikipedia. He’s coming off an incredible National League Championship Series in which he went 8-for-20, batting .400, with two home runs (including the series clincher), three doubles, five RBIs, and four runs scored in the five game series victory over the San Diego Padres.
Stott, 25, made his Major League debut earlier this season, came up big when the Phillies needed him to take over at shortstop during the playoffs. He has hit four doubles, including two in one game, becoming the first Phillies rookie to record multiple extra-base hits in a postseason game.
I am not a Philadelphia Phillies fan, but I may become one for this particular World Series. Let’s go Vegas!
