Today is "Talk Like A Pirate Day" Today...not like that would get old very quick at work! But if you've ever dream of talking like a pirate and getting away with it, today is that day! However, The Mike & Carla Morning Show wasn't too sure on some of the terminology relating to being a "pirate", until one morning show "pirate" made the call into the show!

The term "shiver me timbers" came up and both Mike O'Brian and Carla Rea weren't really sure about the meaning behind the term...but thank goodness one listener with boating experience came to the rescue! He gave us a pretty good idea of what it meant and that it might even have another meaning.

BTW, a lot of fans of this day tell us that if you want to be official, you can be used in many different ways and at different times throughout the day to keep the "piratical" language alive. Feel free to use it when ordering coffee at your local coffee drive thru, ordering lunch for the office at the local fast food joint, or making a deposit at your local bank!

If you need some terms to add to your "pirate" vocabulary, here are a few that might come in handy today...

  1. bilge rat – an insult referring to a rat that lives in the worst place on the ship – the bilge.
  2. landlubber – a person unfamiliar with the sea or sailing.
  3. avast – stop; cease and pay attention.
  4. shiver me timbers – expresses shock, surprise or annoyance.
  5. ahoy – hello.
  6. aye – yes.

All these and more are very acceptable when "talking like a pirate" today! Oh, and if you're feeling a little overboard on the idea, go ahead, wear the eye patch and the bandana to give it some authenticity! So just enjoy the day and have a treasure load of fun with it today!
