Should You Reward Kids For Good Grades
Should parents being rewarding their kid for getting good grades in school? This was the question this morning on The Mike & Carla Morning Show where parents are basically bribing their kids to get good grades with treats, toys…and even cash!
It’s nothing new, but when it came up that one mother was getting heat from neighbors for taking her kids to Starbucks and treating them to the all new Pumpkin Spice Latte! A lot of listeners thought the neighbors should mind their own business and others even came forward to talk about their “rewards” program for good grades.
Both Mike O’Brian and Carla Rea had their own stories of how each of their parents really weren’t on the same page as parents of today. Especially when one mother said she was handing out cold hard cash for good grades. An “A” got you $20, a “B”, $10 and a “C” $5…anything less than that and you were on your own! Given that her kids were pretty good students, it’s no wonder mom didn’t go broke!
A majority of parents thought the system was fine saying that there was nothing wrong for rewarding their kids for getting good grades. One rationale was that if the parents get paid and/or rewarded for working with a paycheck, why should the kids get some sort of “paycheck” for getting the high marks?
One dad told M&C that his daughter loved escargot and every time she would get good grades, dad would have to pony up for a nice dinner while he ordered a cup of soup. All good stuff and all great reasons why most parents today think it’s fine to reward kids for getting good grades in school…no matter what grade they are in!
Listen to the segment from this morning and if you’re on the fence, you decide what’s best for your kids…an enjoy!
