Vegas Golden Knights #1 Goalie Out For Season
The Vegas Golden Knights received bad news this week when they learned that their #1 goalie, Robin Lehner, would miss the entire 2022-2023 NHL season.
According to NHL.com, staff writer Jackie Spiegel reports that the 31 year-old netminder sustained a hip injury late last season. He did not play again after a 2-1 loss the Golden Knights suffered in Philadelphia against the Flyers on March 8th. In April, the team reported that he would miss the rest of the 2021-2022 season and that Lehner would be ready for training camp this coming season.
Those plans were dashed this past Thursday when it was announced that after undergoing shoulder surgery in May 2021, Robin Lehner would now be undergoing hip surgery in the very near future. Rehabbing the injury will most likely mean he will miss the entire 2022-2023 campaign.
So now what? There are three more goalies signed to contracts for the Vegas Golden Knights who will be battling it out for the starting position in training camp. It could be 29-year old Laurent Brossoit, who was Lehner’s backup last season. He went 10-9-3 in 21 starts.
Then there is 25 year-old Logan Thompson who went 10-5-3 in 17 starts.
Plus, the Vegas Golden Knights recently signed NHL veteran goalkeeper Michael Hutchinson to a one-year contract as insurance in net. He is 32-years old, and he has played in 137 NHL games thus far in his career, including action in two games for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season.
Will one of these goalies prove themselves to be up to the challenge of taking the starting goalie position in the upcoming 2022-2023 season? We will probably find out during training camp and the early part of the season. If none of these players step up, there may be some wheeling and dealing going on to try and secure a seasoned NHL starting goalie from another team in the league.
