‘The Eagle Has Landed’ – Fact Or Fiction
Today marks the 53rd anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon, July 20, 1969. My family and I were on summer vacation and I vividly remember watching the black & white TV as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the lunar surface with that famous quote: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind.” We watched with absolute jaw-dropping amazement.
There’s a quick recap about that historic mission on NASA.gov which includes more photos.
Almost as soon as we witnessed this event, conspiracy theorists popped up claiming this was all a big Hollywood movie stage and the astronauts never left Earth. I have always replied that I cannot believe that every astronaut who claims to have walked on the moon, every NASA employee who has been involved with these missions, every news reporter on the three major TV networks at the time (CBS, NBC, ABC), every reporter working with major newspapers like the New York Times and Washington Post, and every reporter working with Associated Press and United Press International, would be able to keep a secret like that, let alone keep reporting it year after year and moon landing after moon landing.
Well nowadays, we can just “Google It” to learn more. So that’s just what I did. Here are “25 Myths About Space” debunked by Space.com, so you can see that there are folks who are much smarter than me who have heard the same conspiracy theories.
