Amazon is giving us a way to help the thousands of youth in Las Vegas who are currently experiencing homelessness. Not just on Prime day either.
Homeless Youth Statistics In Las Vegas
In 2021 alone, over 10,000 of the youth enrolled in the Clark County School District were experiencing homelessness. This can mean anything from couch surfing with friends, to living on the streets of Las Vegas. In one of the most formidable times of a person’s life, these youth are struggling just to keep a roof over their heads. They don’t get to experience the exciting opportunities many of us had available during our high school years. Back-to-school shopping, extracurricular clubs, sports…they all require funds. Even graduation perks have a price tag. These kids should get to have the same memories looking back that many others have.
How You Can Help
The Nevada Partnership For Homeless Youth is working nonstop to help homeless youth in Las Vegas. The organization has launched its inaugural education drive and is making it easy for the community to help. There are several ways to get involved. Community members have the opportunity to donate school supplies by going to NPHY’s website and ordering directly from Amazon. Amazon will ship the supplies directly to NPHY. Participants can also host their own school supply drive and inviting members of their own community to get involved. Friends, family, coworkers, and church groups are just some of those that can be networked with.
Donations purchased outside the Amazon Wish list can be dropped off at 4981 Shirley Street, near UNLV in Las Vegas. 89119. Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Monetary donations can be made on NPHY’s website, or simply by texting “NPHY” to 801801.
Needed school supply items include spiral notebooks, backpacks, binders, folders, crayons and more. The full list can be found at NPHY.org, or on their Amazon wish list here.
Beyond school supplies, these do more to help homeless youth. They support programs offered by NPHY. These programs include Safe Place, Outreach and Engagement, Housing and Shelter, Education and Employment, Thought Leadership and Advocacy, Health and Wellness, Enrichment, and more.
Wendy Rush recently interviewed the CEO of NPHY about the crisis of homeless youth in Las Vegas. You can hear the podcast here.
After this weekend, all we can say is THANK YOU for your amazing water donations.
Mike and Carla's Project: H2O party was a complete success, and we couldn't have done it without YOU, our amazing community. This party was dedicated to raise water donations for our city of Las Vegas and the people who'll need it this summer!
The whole 96.3 KKLZ team partied it up at our radio station. Listeners were able to easily drop off water donations and in return, they were give Port of Subs gift certificates.
We also had a great giveaway (no donations necessary) for a Virgin Hotels Las Vegas staycation, which our lucky listener Barbi was able to win.
Barbi, who came to our Project: H2O party before her work shift, donated TONS of water cases. Her donations will make a major difference in the lives of many.
However, Barbi wasn't the only listeners who donated. We also had Russ, Liz and a few other lovely members of our KKLZ family generously donate many cases of water, too!
It was overall an amazing day where the KKLZ crew did what they love to do: Helping our community of Southern Nevada.
We also want to send our deepest gratitude toward Joe Arevall from Premium Waters who donated 20 pallets of H2O!
We are so thankful for the sheer amount of donations that were given to us. Although water is often a resource that many individuals have direct access to, there’s a great deal of people in our community who simply don’t share that privilege, which makes Mike and Carla’s Project: H2O even more important.
According to the NevadaCurrent.com, there were 186 deaths among the homeless population in Clark County. Thirty out of the 186 deaths involved heat or dehydration-related factors, even if it wasn't the main cause of death.
If you weren’t able to make it to our major Project: H2O party then don’t worry. Port of Subs has provided other store locations across the Vegas Valley that will be intaking donations of water this week. Project: H2O runs until Friday, May 27.
This means we have ONE FULL WEEK LEFT. So, if you've been wanting to donate to this wonderful cause then now is your chance.
