Valerie Bertinelli was very open in a new interview about her regrets about not spending more time with Eddie Van Halen before his death.

In an appearance on Keep It, Bertinelli said, “I wish I had spent more time with Ed when he was sitting in that big house, all alone in the last year of his life. I just, I didn’t go over cause a COVID, and I got so angry that I couldn’t go over because of COVID. I regret not just, you know, masking up and gloving up and still going over there and hanging out, at least in the backyard, because he was so lonely. And then after a certain time, it was like, ‘I’m going to the hospital. I don’t care.'”

She continued, “Yeah. Regrets about not being mature enough to deal with Ed’s illness and his, you know, the drugs and the alcohol. And as opposed to focusing on the drugs and the alcohol focus on the pain that he’s going through that makes him reach for drugs and alcohol, as opposed to just being selfish and going, ‘Well, if you loved me, you would give all that up.’ I mean, that’s not true. You can’t do anything for someone else. And I wish that I had been able to help him get more tools to use besides drugs and alcohol.”

Bertinelli added, “But he was able to do it near the end, and I’m grateful for that because he was able to really connect with all the people that he loved and all the regrets that he had throughout his life. He was able to make up for.”

Bertinelli’s new book, Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today, is out now.
