The Survivor Tree Seedling Program was launched in 2013, by the 9/11 Memorial, Barlett Tree Experts, and John Bowne High School, to nurture trees that will serve as landmarks. 911memorial.org states, “Each year, the 9/11 Memorial gives seedlings from the Survivor Tree to three communities that have endured tragedy in recent years.” The goal of bringing the Survivor Tree back to life is to symbolize reliance and hope.

The deadliest mass shooting happened in Las Vegas, on October 1, at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. The Las Vegas community came together during this hard time with bravery and strength. The 9/11 memorial donated two seedlings from the original Survivor Tree in recognition of this horrific tragedy.
The two ornamental pear tree seedlings were well kept after by forester, David Bradley, for the past two years. The time has come for the two trees to be planted and serve as landmarks in the community. The first tree will be planted at Las Vegas Fire Department Station 5. The station will hold its annual 9/11 remembrance ceremony. The second tree will be planted at Police Memorial Park on September 11 during a public ceremony. Time is set for 11 a.m. (subject to change) Both trees will be planted in honor of the 20th Anniversary of 9/11.
The Bahamas, Christchurch, New England, and five New York City hospitals were chosen to receive seedlings in 2020.
