John Mulaney Is Out Of Rehab
Comedian John Mulaney is out of rehab after two months of treatment, and is reportedly doing well in outpatient sober care.
Mulaney had checked himself into a Pennsylvania rehab facility for 60 days last December, following a relapse. The former Saturday Night Live writer was struggling with alcohol and drug abuse, including cocaine, Page Six reports.
A source told the outlet, “He is doing well, although he is still not ready to return to work.”
The seemingly clean-cut comic has been candid about his decades-long addiction journey, but the announcement of checking into rehab was a shock to his fans.
But Mulaney’s decision was met with a wave of support from fans and fellow comedians. Olivia Munn tweeted: “Sending SO MUCH love and support to John Mulaney. You got this.”

Mulaney revealed in 2019 that his partying and prescription and illegal drug abuse started at a young age. He began drinking at age 13 in order to get attention, saying, “I was really outgoing, and then at 12, I wasn’t. I didn’t know how to act. And then I was drinking, and I was hilarious again.” He first became sober at 23-years-old after years of blacking out, admitting to even drinking perfume during a 2005 bender.
The comedian sparked concern after a bizarre appearance on NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers last November, featuring a rambling bit about the Royal Family. A source said Mulaney was “out of his mind” on substances during the segment, which raised concerns about his health, Daily Mail reports.
The clip doesn’t appear to have been aired on TV, but was shared online a few weeks after filming. He wore a large trench coat and large sunglasses, which he received from The Strokes’ singer Julian Casablancas, after a performance on Saturday Night Live that Mulaney hosted. At one point he removed the sunglasses to reveal squinting eyes.
Last December Mulaney revealed he had taken a role as a staff writer on Late Night With Seth Meyers for the sake of his own mental health. while describing how a lack of routine can negatively affect a person’s well-being. As he admitted in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, “I really needed a job…I like having a boss and having assignments to do.”
