Disney Redesigns ‘Jungle Cruise’ After Criticism Over Indigenous People Portrayal

Disney has announced its redesigning 'Jungle Cruise' after long criticism over the ride's portrayal of indigenous people.

Animatronics from the ride depicts indigenous people as 'savages' or 'primitive.'

“As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us," said Disney Executive Carmen Smith, in a blog post.

The ride first welcomed visitors in 1955.

This isn't the first time Disney has reimagined one of its rides over its insensitive views.

'Splash Mountain' was redesigned last summer amid the George Floyd protests. The rides strong ties to the 1946 movie “Song of the South,” was deemed racist for many.

It has since been reimagined with the 2009 movie "The Princess and the Frog,” which has an African-American female lead.
