Christmas Cards in 2020 – Should They Reflect The Year?

Author Nancy Brooks // Country Writer, Beasley Media Group

Christmas cards may be a bit different this year, as most Americans have had an unusual and fairly dark 2020. But that can make sending Christmas cards with a bit of humor more important that ever.

Our family usually sends out holiday cards the day after Thanksgiving to nudge all those people who had no intention of sending us a card a bit of time to return one to us. We’ve been sending family cards every year since our 21 yer-old daughter was born.

Now with two children, Ā each year we like to put my daughter and 13-year-old son together in shots so we don’t send pictures of ourselves and get that “Man, they gained weight” response when the card is opened.

In 2019 a few months before Christmas, we became the adoptive parents of six Great Dane babies, so we reflected that in our card that year and what a great photo we got. Still have no idea how both Dane puppies looked straight into the camera. Talk about lucky!

This year was weird — to put it lightly — Ā so we put a lot of thought into how we would represent this “unprecedented year.” And election humor? No, we have got too many loved ones on both sides, so we went with masks, Christmas masks to be exact.

However, some may choose not to reflect the year 2020 and just go with joy, peace and love. That’s okay too.

For us, we sat the kids (they’re now young adults) down with a black screen behind them and started shooting, some pics with masks on, some without and what we got was good. What to write? Well, we went with “Merry Christmas” and then something to reflect the year: “2020. ONE. WEIRD. YEAR.” Yeah that sums it up.

Mail goes out on Saturday and we can’t wait to see what other friends and family come up with in this crazy year that let’s be honest yearns for a fun holiday card more than any other year.

This is what we came up with for our 2020 card:

Our family 2019 holiday card:
