Bruce Bennett / StaffWe're all buying the shirts and watching the games, but do we know where the series name came from? The Stanley Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, who was Canada's Governor General in the 1890's. Stanley purchased a decorative cup while in London and later donated it to Canada's top amateur hockey club in 1893. And thus a tradition was born.
And since then, the cup has had some interesting experiences. It has been to war, had babies baptized in it, it has its own twitter page and appointed bodyguards. And people even say it cursed the New York Rangers in 1994 after the disrespected the cup (you HAVE to read the article and see what they did to it).
